Vocabulary

Vocabulary learning is crucial to success in Modern Languages and pupils should be developing their independent study habits by learning vocabulary on a weekly basis.  Pupils will have regular vocabulary tests to ensure they are learning new words and are making progress in their learning.  See the section below on Vocabulary learning for tips on how to do this.

Vocabulary Learning

When you are learning vocabulary for a test or for homework, you need to make sure that you can both understand the French words if you see or hear them and that you can write the French if given the English meaning.

In order to do this you need to make sure that when you copy your vocabulary lists into your jotter the English is on one side of the page and the French is on the other.  The easiest way to do this is to fold your page in half lengthways.  Never copy all the French first or all the English first, always copy the French/English and then its meaning, this way you will avoid making mistakes and messing up the whole list by missing one word out.

When you come to learn the list use SACAWAC = Study And Cover And Write And Check.  This is the best way of ensuring accuracy.  It is time consuming, but you need to keep going until you stop making mistakes.  If you’ve folded your page in half, as suggested above, you can cover up one side and go down the list to see if you can remember the meanings, then simply take the cover away and check if you’re right.

If you have internet access at home, you can also use Quizlet to help you learn your vocabulary.

Homework

Pupils are expected to complete homework tasks by the set deadline.  Every S1 pupil has the choice of a weekly homework task to allow pupils personalisation & choice in how they submit their homework assignments.  Pupils should generally expect to have one homework assignment per week.  For the most part these tasks will be chosen from the monthly homework tasks which are detailed in class, displayed in classrooms and in the Modern Languages corridor.

Monthly Homework Tasks

  • You are to complete one homework task a week from the options given.
  • You may do the tasks in any order you wish.
  • Tick off the tasks as you do them.
  • Your teacher will collect your homework at the end of each week and you will be awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze depending on the quality of your work. Take care with the content, the accuracy and the presentation of your work.
  • These tasks are designed to encourage you to take responsibility for your own learning so please try your best with every activity.
  • You may use resources such as your jotters, books, dictionaries or even the internet to help you.
  • You may also have learning homework and another short piece of homework each week.
  • Bonne chance!

S3 sees the final year of the Broad General Education and in French we concentrate on bringing more depth to the course and allowing pupils to develop their language skills in a range of ways.  Pupils are encouraged to take more responsibility for their own learning and to become more independent learners.  We use Edmodo to reinforce work studied in class, to allow a choice of how to submit assignments and to provide extra resources for revision and private study.

In class, a lot of emphasis is put on using Co-operative learning techniques, Assessment is for Learning and Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) to promote the 4 capacities of a Curriculum for Excellence, but also to facilitate the acquisition of those essential skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work - teamwork, presentation skills, communication skills, leadership skills, ICT skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

As in previous years, we use our Film Studies unit to enhance learners' knowledge of French culture and to promote Global Citizenship.
