Practical Woodwork

Practical Metalwork


These courses are almost entirely practical in nature. They focus on developing practical skills in woodworking and/or metalworking. They enable pupils to gain experience and skill in the use of a range of tools, equipment and materials, working with wood, manufactured boards and/or metals. Our students will learn to read and interpret Technical drawings and produce accurate and well finished artefacts. The course provides opportunities to develop and enhance practical creativity and practical problem-solving skills, and to gain an appreciation of safe working practices in a workshop or similar environment.

The aims of the course are to:

  • Foster practical skills in the creation of artefacts
  • develop knowledge, understanding and skills of general aspects of practical woodworking /Metalwork activity
  • encourage independence and the ability to make choices
  • highlight the importance of safety and encourages responsible attitudes in the workshop environment
  • contribute to personal development, in particular to practical capability

 

There are 3 possible courses within Practical Technologies;

  • Practical Craft Skill National 3
  • Practical Woodwork National 4 / 5
  • Practical Metalwork National 4 / 5

These courses are the perfect preparation for any or construction industry apprenticeship or vocational college course. They also provide excellent life-skills which enable pupils to take on personal projects with confidence.
