Music qualifications

In S1/2 pupils will build skills on a range of instruments including keyboard, tuned percussion, guitar and drum kit. These skills will be developed in a wide range of musical contexts, allowing pupils to access a variety of experiences and outcomes. Pupils will also have the option to take up an orchestral instrument (upper/lower strings, brass, woodwind) and will receive weekly lessons which will compliment classroom activities.

Pupils who decide to pursue Music in S3 will focus on two instruments as part of the Performing Skills unit with lessons now being available on acoustic guitar, bass guitar, tuned percussion and drum kit. The Understanding Music and Composing Skills units will supplement instrumental skills while allowing pupils to experience music in a wider variety of contexts.

In S4 pupils will work towards completing assessments for the Performing Skills, Understanding Music and Composing Skills units. Pupils studying towards a full National 4/5 course award will be required to perform an 8 minute programme of music across their two chosen instruments which will be a continuation of their instrumental progress in S3.

Pupils electing to study Music in S5/6 can pursue individual units or full course awards at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher levels. Following a Similar structure to National 4/5, the Higher and Advanced Higher courses provide progression from the BGE phase while continuing to challenge pupils’ instrumental skills. A programme of music across both instruments lasting 12 minutes at Higher level and 18 minutes at Advanced Higher level is required to complete the Performing Skills unit. Similar to the National 5 course, the Higher/Advanced Higher Understanding Music units are assessed as a final question paper which pupils sit in May as part of the SQA exam diet. A variety of homework tasks, essays and projects will provide pupils with a deeper understanding of the musical concepts required to prepare for this assessment.
